Swedish Covenant Hospital agreed this week to pay a $7.8 million settlement to an elderly woman whose meningitis went repeatedly undetected by emergency room staff.
Rosemary Mittenthal, a former nurse, went to Swedish Covenant twice, complaining of severe joint pain, neck stiffness, and headaches, but was sent home by emergency room staff, who assured her it was not a serious problem. She now suffers from both mental and physical disabilities caused by the delayed diagnosis and treatment.
